Weekend Thoughts : Catch up and confessions

Happy Sunday! The sun is out and the birds are chirping and after this weeks snow storm it feel like a complete breath of fresh air. I had a feeling this would happen, that despite all my good intentions to keep this blog updated along side my day job, it hasn’t of course happened. But I won’t go on about that, or make more excuses, so I thought I would do a small catch up post with some things that have been happening, things i’ve been discovering and enjoying. Also I do try to post at least daily on Instagram so make sure to follow me there too! First up…

    REDUCE : RECYCLE : REMAKE : RAEBURN

Sustainability in high end fashion shouldn’t just be another trend. With this recent surge of designers looking to create more sustainable lines within their collections it’s hard not to be slightly cynical that, as is the nature of fashion, it’s just a fad and once the David Attenborough documentary, has faded from consumers minds, so too will the efforts of designers to be more mindful. (To be fair though I am by nature a cynic; I am cynical about everything and regularly have to check myself to ensure I’m not over doing it and about to be abandoned by my friends.) Exploring the world of Christopher Raeburn One designer I…

Weekend Thoughts : is there a solution?

So I read a lot about all these great brands and designers making and selling ethical and sustainable products and that is great, but on the wider scale of things what is the solution to fast fashion and the high street? Obviously it’s a very complicated subject, and I really don’t know much about economics and I don’t want to pretend I do, but is there a solution out there to make things better or is it just a case of little by little? I find it difficult to articulate myself sometimes so I am just going write down my thoughts in bullet points, and hope that does the job.…

    Weekend Thoughts : Default Slavery

I’m an ethical blogger but at the weekend I caved and bought a earrings from a high street shop because I was tired, wanted something nice and couldn’t be bothered to go to the charity shops. So a few weeks ago I wrote a post where I laid out all the outfits I wanted to wear to various upcoming weddings, (you can read it here). However when it came to two of the most recent weddings I realised that actually the Vivienne Westwood dress is more than a little snug on me now and is definitely not appropriate for a casual country wedding. Luckily I had the pink dress on…

    Sunday Confessions

One of my favourite podcasts is ‘The Guilty Feminist’, it’s hilarious and I urge you to go and listen now – not to go too far off on a tangent but the stories and anecdotes they tell have really helped me to process why some things irritate and annoy me and to then articulacy explain why. Anyway they start each episode with a confession of something they have done or thought that is non-feminist. I really love the concept as it instantly takes the pressure off a rather serious topic, and a topic which there is a lot of confusion around. so I thought it might be a cool thing that…

Weekend Thoughts : Cruelty free animals or humans?

A few questions that have been bugging me this week. I’ve asked questions before about the reasons ethical beauty is more accessible than fashion, as it’s something that affects us directly. (You can read that here) But that was more about consumers in general. This week I’m thinking more specifically about on-line influencers… If you are promoting, buying and using cruelty free make-up and beauty brands, then on the same platforms showing off your high-street clothing, is that not hypocritical ? Again I know some of it comes down to affordability and I am completely aware that a lot of ethical fashion just isn’t affordable for everyone, and of course we…

    Weekend Thoughts : Empowerment

I read a blog post recently asking the question of wether fashion is empowering for women, it was a good post and had some great points but I noticed it only touched on one step in a garments life cycle. The step where it is bought and styled. Yes! fashion can be and should be empowering for women. We should be able to dress however we want, in a way that makes us feel good without any outwardly spoken judgment from other people. I love the power of clothes, the way they can make you feel, the memories they can hold and the possibilities they can provide, even if…

    The joy of vintage jewellery

As a teenager I became obsessed with costume jewellery and since then I have collected it, in particular vintage and second hand pieces. Nothing fancy, just fun! I would buy huge chunky brightly coloured pieces, make my own out of plastic animals and bits of barbie (it was the emotional years), and also rummage through thrift stores and vintage shops to find interesting unique pieces no one else would have. A lot of that collection has been whittled down over the years and I like to think I have a more refined collection now, No faux Chanel earrings in site 😉 Above: 1970’s ball necklace, moon and stars clip on…
